Voorkom brand en brandwonden tijdens de feestdagen, de brandweer geeft tips

Juist in deze tijd, waarin de kerstversieringen in huis worden ophangen,  doet u er goed aan stil te staan bij de risico’s op brand. Brand komt nog te vaak voor. In Nederland zijn 15 woningbranden per dag, per jaar zijn dat er 6.000.

Daarnaast leidt brand jaarlijks tot honderden gewonden. Kinderen lopen extra veel risico om brandwonden op te lopen. Zij zien zelf vaak geen gevaar en hebben een volwassene nodig die hun huis veilig maakt. Ernstige brandwonden zijn levensgevaarlijk. Zorg daarom voor voldoende maatregelen om brand te voorkomen. De brandweer heeft een aantal tips op een rijtje gezet.

Feestversiering
Met brandbaar versieringsmateriaal loopt u een groot risico’s. Koop daarom brandveilige versiering en vraag er nadrukkelijk om. Ook op de verpakking kunt u zien of de versiering brandveilig is. Hang versieringen zo op dat niemand er tegenaan kan lopen. Zorg er ook voor dat versieringen niet in aanraking komen met verlichting en apparaten die warm worden. Hang de versiering op met ijzerdraad, dan valt het bij brand niet snel naar beneden. Gebruik geen natuurlijk dennengroen. Dat is zeer brandbaar.

Kerstbomen
Een kunstkerstboom die moeilijk brandbaar is, is veel veiliger dan een natuurlijke kerstboom. Wanneer u toch kiest voor een echte boom, zet deze niet in de loop- of vluchtroute. Zo voorkomt u dat u bij brand ingesloten raakt. Zorg er voor dat de boom goed stevig staat. Zet de boom niet te dicht bij de gordijnen of andere brandbare materialen. Om te zorgen dat de boom minder brandbaar is, moet de boom vocht vast kunnen houden. Plaats de boom in een houder waarin deze 5 centimeter onder water kan staan en vul het reservoir dagelijks bij met water. Een kerstboom met kluit kan natuurlijk ook, mits deze voldoende water krijgt.

In een verwarmde kamer kan een boom maximaal drie weken het vocht vasthouden, daarna wordt de boom droog en is het gevaarlijk. Gebruik nooit echte kaarsjes in de boom. Een moment van onoplettendheid kan uw boom in een fakkel doen veranderen.

Verlichting
Gebruik alleen goedgekeurde elektrische verlichting. Controleer voor het gebruik of de bedrading niet is beschadigd. Gebruik een goed passend verlengsnoer en leg dat zo neer dat niemand erover kan struikelen. Plak bekabeling die over de vloer loopt met stevige tape vast. Rol kabelhaspels helemaal af. Deze worden anders warm, waardoor brand kan ontstaan. Verleng een verlengsnoer nooit met een ander verlengsnoer. Let erop dat verlichting die warm wordt niet in de buurt is van brandbare materialen. Schakel de verlichting altijd uit wanneer u weggaat of gaat slapen.

Kaarsen
Zet kaarsen in een stevige houder op een vlakke ondergrond. Gebruik geen houders van plastic, hout of ander makkelijk brandbaar materiaal. Zet kaarsen niet dicht bij andere brandbare materialen, zoals de gordijnen. Zorg dat kaarsen buiten bereik van kinderen en huisdieren blijven en laat ze nooit alleen met brandende kaarsen, ook niet voor een paar minuten. De kaarsen in kerststukjes kunt u beter niet aansteken. Doet u het toch, laat de kaarsen dan niet te ver opbranden en zet het kerststukje in het zicht.

fonduen en gourmetten
Zorg dat het fondue- of gourmetstel op een niet brandbaar onderblad met opstaande randen staat. Zo wordt de tafel niet te heet en vangt u gemorste olie op. Gebruikt u spiritus? Vul dan nooit de brander in de nabijheid van vuur. Vul de brander pas als deze helemaal is afgekoeld en doe dit niet op de tafel. Denk er aan dat een spiritusvlam nagenoeg onzichtbaar is; het kan nog branden terwijl u denkt dat hij uit is.

Net als bij gewoon koken kan bij fonduen de vlam in de pan slaan. Leg daarom een passend deksel in de buurt om snel te kunnen reageren. Een branddeken is een goed alternatief. Zet een elektrisch fonduestel zo dicht mogelijk bij het stopcontact, dan kan niemand over het snoer struikelen. Gebruik geen pannen van aardewerk om te fonduen. Die zijn niet bestand tegen de hoge temperatuur. Houd kleine kinderen weg bij een fondue- of gourmetstel.
